Lap Tops are great you can take them with you wherever you go and in any room of the house. There are however some fundamental differences ergonomically when it comes to working at the lap top. Compared to the standard more commonly used monitors which are up on their own stands the lap top screen is often at a lower lever to the users eye path. This irregularity can cause the user to slouch as they look down on to the lap top screen which they are using.

This is where the Jelly Fish Lap Top Stand comes in to play as it can be used to prop up the lap top in three different heights and positions so the screen is at eye level to the user making it more user friendly – this can be achieved by plugging another keyboard in to lap top which can be used on the desk top.
The Jelly Fish is available in plastic in Red, Yellow, Black or White and at £49.00 takes the sting out of any ergonomic solution.

Which office chairs feature in M’s office in the blockbuster Quantum of Solace? The chair is appropriately named Silver chair and is made by the german office chair manufacturer Interstuhl and was designed by the Hamburg Architect Hadi Teherani. The Bond Brand has always shown the very best in interiors other high end products so it was only natural that the set designers should choose the Silver chair other its contempories as it has been beautifully designed. There are two versions of the chair shown in the Bond classic the medium back version was appointed to Judy Dench in the film. Martin Long the Managing Director of Intersthul stated that the silver range is distinctive and excludes opulence and character and having the chair feature in the James Bond film was a great compliment.

It has always been that managers choose executive chairs that mimic their status in the office. The chairs had to be respectable, taller than the standard operator chair, and usually in leather rather than fabric. The main aim of the chair was to show the managers superiority within the office, even though this maybe true it seems that nowadays executive chairs are sold not just on their aesthetic properties, but on comfort and ergonomic value.
Research brought out in recent years show that not sitting properly or sitting in an uncomfortable position reduces productivity and efficiency within the office environment. The long term effect of this means, that companies are losing money due to their workers becoming needlessly fatigued.
A study by American manufacturers Herman Miller, states: “if a worker loses 10 minutes of work a day due to fatigue, the monetary loss per year for the company is about $600 per worker”.
As well as this, not sitting properly or in a position that makes you uncomfortable makes you more likely to get up from your chair more often. Also in the study carried out by Herman Miller, they found: “it can take as long as 25 minutes to regain concentration and focus on work after any type of interruption”, so not only are workers more fatigued throughout the day, they are more distracted as well.
With all this new information available to us, it is quite simply better to take into account the ergonomic values that a chair has rather than just purchasing a chair merely on the way it looks.

Ergonomics – Use of VDU screens
Here are some tips to reduce eye strain and headaches when using a computer over a prolonged period of time.
Reduce reflection on the VDU screen
Always try and position your PC on the desk at right angles to the window. If the window is behind you light will shine on to the screen and the reflection will cause your eyes to work harder. If the window is in front of you then the light shining in your eyes will have the same effect.
If the ceiling lights don’t have diffusers in them (Cat 2) then this can cause reflection on the screen. Ambient light for offices should be between 300-500 Lux, if the overhead lights are causing reflection than reduce their brightness and increase the ambient light level with diffusers. Alternatively use desk lamps to highlight on the desk area.
Reduce screen flicker. The frequency of the screen should be set to 85Hz many manufactures set their screens to 54Hz factory settings. The frequency can be altered in the Windows control box or via the graphics card.
Set the VDU at the correct distance on the desk. This should be no less than 630mm (25”) the eye will have to work harder if focusing on objects that are nearer than this.
Keep the screen clean and free of dust
Look away from the screen every few minutes and concentrate on a distant object
