Ergonomics, I don’t have to say really, have become the topic of much conversation not only in the office furniture industry but in many other industries. We spend a lot of time sitting down, more than ever before and it won’t become a shock if I say that nationally and internationally we are all getting larger on the whole. The Belize stool is a great way to not only take the weight off your legs but also keep you in a good ergonomic position when not only working but also relaxing as well.

There are other stools like this on the market at the moment, these include the Sway Stool and the Muvman Stool, however having tried all three I believe that the Belize comes out on top.
The Belize features a large round base that can easily support you if you lean too far, something that I found the Sway Stool lacks as it has a relatively small base. The Belize also features a round seat that is mounted on a height adjustable single pole that can suit users of all different sizes. The stool is available in a huge range of fabrics, imitation leathers and real leathers that its rival stools do not have, so we are sure that you will find the right material for you.

The reason that these type of stools have become popular in recent times is that they not only classed as café furniture and bistro furniture, but they can also be classed as office furniture and ergonomic office furniture as they will appeal to both industries.

This stool is available for purchase and you can get more information on this stool by calling our sales team or by visiting our sister site Online Reality. Click here to purchase.

Don’t let the title fool you, as a working nation; it appears that we do not stand up as often as we should be doing. It is a simple enough activity to partake in our working lives; however recent study has proved that we are not standing up as much as we should be doing. By this I mean that we work to long at our office desks and do not take a break. It seems that the most common form of communication within the office is email as opposed to simply face-to-face communication and if we carry on like this then it will be bad news for all of us.
A recent study that has been carried out at the British Psycological Society Annual Occupational Conference, claims that people spend on average 5 hours and 41 minutes sat at their desk every single working day. During these times, it seems that office workers do not take regular breaks from their office chair to move around and increase the blood flow to their body.
The main problem is that we are an, “ageing” population that appears to be working later into to their lives; however we do not take into account our health when deciding to stay late at the office. The situation is that we do not think about our bodies and health when we decide to either work late or take longer hours. The survey was undertaken with more than 1000 people from a variety of jobs including retail and telecommunications. It seems that sitting at your office desk on your swivel chair for hours a day has a link to your weight, surprise surprise.
What we need to do is to come up with a way of reminding people to get up and walk around. Unfortunately the only reminder we have so far is a post-it note on the computer screen. The advice is, from the experts, is to talk to colleagues face to face, rather than email.

It is now common knowledge that office workers are working longer hours and that this is having a direct impact on our health. There has been a rise in the amount of work related injuries as we choose to stay seated in our office chairs at our office desks while working. The reason for this is that even though you may exercise before and after work, the time that you spend at work is mainly in a sedentary position. There has been a rise in recent years for the purchasing of height adjustable desks that you can actually stand by and work at. For some however they might find this mad.
Retail workers and bank cashiers tend to stand all day whilst at work and this does have negatives effects on the body. Standing all day whilst working can actually lead to problems such as varicose veins and in some very extreme cases, spontaneous miscarriages. With this in mind perhaps the answer is not to get rid of our chairs after all but to make sure that we use them properly.
The main reason for the rise in height adjustable desks, including treadmill desks is that too much sitting can actually lead to higher risk diseases such as cancer and diabetes as well as cardiovascular diseases. The reason for this is that when you remain in a sedentary position for a long period of time the the enzyme that is designed to take the fat out of the blood stream drops in production leaving the fat to flow around your body.
There is no definite answer to whether we should just stand or just sit at work, but a combination of both. The recommended maximum time that you should spend just sitting at your desk before moving is 30 minutes. This does included getting up and walking around.

All we seem to hear these days in the office furniture industry is ergonomics. It is a very important subject especially as more and more people are getting injured at work due to spending long periods of time working at their office desk and sitting in their office chair. Not only is this problem increasing, but the portable way of working is on the rise as well. There is one product that is trying to combine these two factors and that is the LaptopTower LT.

The design of the Laptop tower is unlike any other office desk. You don’t use a chair for this, you simply stand which means that already you are in a more ergonomic posture. Unlike other desks, the tower is compact and takes up very little space so can be used in a range of domestic and commercial applications. The tower comes equipped with a lighted, pull out laptop shelf with mouse pad, four shelves and sockets to accommodate other small electrical items such as printers or projectors. One of the great benefits to this tower is that it has its own in built cable management system so stray cables will not cause clutter. The tower is powered by a single transparent cable leading to the sockets inside.

Not only can this piece of office furniture be used as a workstation, but it can be used to give presentations as well. It’s compact so is able to save space in the office or meeting room for other necessary items such as office storage, meeting room tables or even a large boardroom table if one is needed in the room. The tower comes in a range of veneers and paints that are used in contrast to produce an attractive workstation.

More and more people nowadays are deciding to work at an office desk and spending long periods of time in an office desk. It is no surprise that the numbers of injuries that are related to work such as back pain, neck strain and shoulder problems are on the rise. The answer is, unless you’re willing to spend less time working in your office chair or at your desk whether it be a home office desk or at work, is to upgrade and get an ergonomic office chair.

There is never any call for traditional style office furniture any more. I am not saying that there is no longer a demand for it; I’m just saying that if you look in commercial offices these days, you are likely to find more modern office desking and more contemporary operator chairs or executive furniture. This is even the case in boardrooms, even though the idea of a boardroom is an old one, the boardroom tables that are around today tend to be modern and sleek.

It is not the look and feel of the furniture that has changed, but our shift towards ergonomic chairs and desks due to the increase rate of work related injuries. With this in mind, let me introduce a product that is both modern and ergonomic as well as being needed in the office. The product I am talking about is Flo.

Computer arms are often overlooked as all monitors are provided with a stand; however these stands are by no means ergonomic. The problem is that the monitor cannot be set at the right height for the user and are not height adjustable, so cannot be set for users at different heights. This is why monitor arms are so important, as they can be set at different heights and tilts depending on the user, which over time can prevent such problems as straining of the neck.

The Flo computer arm is unique in this way as not only can it provide an ergonomic solution for monitors, but it has the unrivalled capability to provide an ergonomic solution for tablet and touch screen technology. Unlike other monitor arms, the Flo is easy to adjust using it’s unique Geometric Spring System (GSS). Another feature that is exclusive to the Flo is the installation performance meter. This handy little gauge records the weight setting after adjustment so that the exact weight tension can be replicated on all of the other arms for a quicker, better and more effective installation.

Below are some images of the Flo monitor arm:

It is common knowledge that the amount of musculoskeletal disorders are on the increase and that this is a direct correlation to the increasing amount of time that we spend working in the office sitting on our office chairs. It is no surprise then that more and more chair manufacturers are spending more time and effort into trying to find the most effective ergonomic solution, by that I mean office chairs and desks to these ever increasing problems. It is not to say that these efforts are wasted, in fact quite the opposite, however for those that do suffer from an MSD; physiotherapy might be another option to ease your pain.

Two government departments in Northern Ireland have provided early access to physiotherapy for staff with MSDs (musculoskeletal disorders). The results were quite positive with 80% of those treated said that the treatment had prevented them from going absent with over 80% indicating that there absence had been shortened.

Based on the latest statistics released from the Health and Safety Executive 227,000 people have an MSD of the back, 215,000 of the upper limbs or neck and 96,000 of the lower limbs. These figures are staggering with the number one cause of long term absence at work being lower back pain amongst manual workers with 30% of primary care consultations with GPs being caused by MSDs.

To put this in monetary terms, West Suffolk hospital trust in Bury St Edmunds was commended in the Boorman report for having achieved savings of £170,000 through referring patients to physiotherapy. This not only saved money but also caused a 40% reduction in lost days through sickness absences.

In 2008/09 an estimated 538,000 people in Britain who worked in the last year, believed that they were suffering from an MSD that was made worse by work. This meant that an estimated 9.3 million working days were lost to MSD in Great Britain in 2008/09. This trend will only ever increase if we carry on the way that we are. Perhaps it is time that we introduce physiotherapy into the workplace to help prevent an augmentation in this number and perhaps see if we can reduce it.

Ergonomics gets mentioned all the time when talking about office work, in particular office furniture. Vast amounts of money have been invested in trying to find the solution to the problem of work related injuries due to long hours in front of a computer. We have large amounts of ergonomic chairs, ergonomic desks, height adjustable desks etc… available on the market today, but the truth is we probably will never be able to find a solution that will suit everyone in the world’s needs. There are things we can do ourselves however that will help to prevent these injuries from occurring. Below are some stretches that can be done in the comfort of your own office chair.

Place your hands behind your head. Bend your head forward slightly, breathe in deeply and slowly stretch out the upper part of your neck. Whilst doing this, make sure that you keep the back and shoulder regions as upright as possible. Hold this position for five slow breaths.

Using your right hand place it above your left ear. Pull your head to the right so you can feel the side of your neck stretch and hold for approximately 3 breaths. Once you have done this, repeat this on the opposite side.

For this exercise you will need to stand by a wall. Stand sideways to the wall and place your left hand on the wall. Making sure that your arm is straight, stretch your right arm over your head and to the left. Hold this position for four deep breaths and repeat this movement on the other side. This position stretches the side of the spine and its muscles.

Whilst seated in your chair place your hands behind the back of the chair and arch your back over the chair whilst pushing out your chest and lifting your hands. This stretches the chest and its muscles.

Whilst standing, extend your left arm and point your hand down. Place your right hand over the back of the left and stretch your forearm. Hold for five deep breaths and repeat for the other side

Place your palms together and point your fingers up. Place your hands, with your palms and fingers fully touching, in the centre of your chest and raise your elbows and hold for five deep breaths whilst stretching the muscles in front of the wrist and arm.

Hold hands in front of you and stretch your fingers out wide and stretch the palms. Hold this for four breaths whilst stretching the palms and fingers.

For this chair you will need to be seated. Try to find a non-swivel chair, for example a conference chair or even a café chair. Cross your right thigh over your left and twist the upper part of your body so you’re stretching the lumbar region of your back.

The word ergonomic gets mentioned all the time within the office furniture industry, especially when it comes to chairs. With the ever increasing number of people choosing to work in the office, the number of work related injuries is increasing. By this I mean injuries that are sustained due to posture and sitting on a chair for 8 or more hours a day. This is why ergonomic chairs are becoming ever more popular and one thing in which they all have in common is a lumbar support.

A lumbar support is designed to be positioned at the lower part of the back to give the body an S shape curve. There is a new chair on the market that is attempting to challenge the lumbar and that is the Axia Air chair.

The Axia Air, manufactured by BMA Nomique, uses an adjustable pelvic support which supports the pelvic region of your back at the base of the spine. The reason for this is that when the support is placed against the pelvis, your body naturally keeps a good posture. The design of the back means that your body is almost always in constant contact with the back of the chair whether you are sitting forward or back. As well as this when the chair is in the recline position, the arms stay exactly where they are compared to when the back is straight, which is unlike other rival chairs. The reason for this is that the armrests are supposed to be extensions of the desk and keep your arms in the correct position.

Aesthetics are not compromised with this chair and the overall appearance of this chair is fantastic. This chair is fully adjustable as standard, however there is one feature that is unusual when it comes to office or swivel chairs, and that is that it has been designed for disassembly. The seats are interchangeable, which is great for maintenance, however if you have a particular back problem then you can change the seat within a matter of seconds for a seat pad that has a shape specific to your need.

On final thing to note about this chair is that it is guaranteed for 10 years and is 97% recyclable and manufactured from 59% recycled material, so not only is this chair unique in function, it is also environmentally friendly as well.
