Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959)
A prolific American Designer and Architect with over 500 completed projects who worked on many office and public buildings across the US and in 1991 was recognised as the greatest American Architect ever by his peers. Born in Wisconsin his father was a minister, lawyer and school teacher who married into a wealthy family the Lloyd Jones’s who emanated from Wales. His parents separated when Frank was 14, a few years later Frank left for Chicago and worked for a number of architectural practices. He married his first wife in 1889, Kitty the daughter of wealthy business man. 1890 saw Frank working on domestic design work and accepting private work outside his normal work many of these were homes around his local area and still stand today. In 1902 he designed his first office building for the Larkin Soap Company near Buffalo. In 1909 Frank eloped to Europe with the wife on one of his wealthy clients and returned to the US in 1912.
Frank’s influence on office space is the open plan concept which he took from the Prairie style houses he designed into the commercial office environment. T the Johnsons wax headquarters he designed his famous writing desk which is on exhibition at the Museum of modern Art in New York. Frank also designed many other types of office furniture which he saw as an integral part of the buildings he designed.

It has been widely reported today that Bill Gates has spent over 2.50 million dollars on new office furniture for his personal office from where he has launched his top secret, new venture bgC3. Much of this is with B and B Italia who provide high design office furniture and soft seating in Italy. Notable ranges from B&B include the Maxalto collection of conference tables and desks, AC range of minimalist executive furniture designed by Antonio Citterio and Archie tables designed by Paolo Piva.

A design based office furniture Company based in Belgium Bulo was founded by Walter Busschop in 1963. His first successful project was a wooden office storage trolley. This profit of which were re invested to form the Company. In 1970 Bulo follows the total design concept offering the Belgium market Ofiice furniture and chairs, Plants, wall coverings and office lighting. In 1987 Bulo opened its new factory in Mechelen within the industrial area between Antwerp and Brussels and became the leader on the Belgium office furniture market. 1989 saw the launch of Buloflex  a new space saving office furniture system, followed by Bulosafe a keyless lockable storage range. In 19921 Dirk and Luk Busschop worked with local office interiors designers and launjched the H20 range. Carte Blache is a forum for Architects dn Designers to work with Bulo to create designer furniture, these collaborations have led to products such as  Easy Rider by Danny Venlet, Love table by Edouard Francois and the Spine desk bench system by Evelyne Merkx

Be Glass office furniture

The BE range of glass desks from Italy are now available in new colours, blue, and red adding to the existing range of white, transparent and black glass. Frmes are also available in white, anthracite or silver. The minimalist bit substantial steel frame in 2mm thick. At the corner joints there is a chrome ABS spacer as a design feature.
Desks and tables are rectangular with 800mm and 600mm depths, the latter an ideal size for a return. There is also a range of 317mm high coffee tables in the same finishes. Accessories include a metal slotted screen, Plexigalss modesty panels and a metal cable tray.
 The Be range which is also available in wood finishes as a bench desk system, is manufactured in Italy and is usually available on a four week delivery period. The guarantee on this product is three years from manufacture. Be workstations and glass desk are compatible in the Uni storage range of cabinets, book shelves and cupboards.

Kinnarps office furniture

Kinnarps Office Furniture
Europe’s third largest manufacturer is based in a small village in Sweden  called Kinnarp. Founded in 1942 by Evy and Jal Andersson and with two other employees the Company initially started out manufacturing bespoke office furniture for architects. In 1943 Kinnarps graduated to the supply of tambour cupboards to the Swedish Government. In the 50’s a complete range of modular office furniture was successfully launched followed by a furniture catalogue in 1952. In 1959 Kinnarps were carrying out their own deliveries and installations in Sweden. Further growth in the 60’s lead to a showroom in Stockholm, employees numbered 24 and the turnover began to reach 2 million Krona. It wasn’t until the eldest son became CEO in 1973 that Kinnarps considered the export market.. A new factory led to a more comprehensive range of office furniture, office chairs, reception seating.
In 1993 they were the first furniture Company in Sweden to receive ISO9001 this was followed by ISO14001 on 1997.In 2000 Kinnarps was awarded the Competence Company of the year award. Popular ranges include Flok training tables, Kapton Executive office chairs and Series f desk and tables

A UK based office furniture Company Maine specialise in metal office storage solutions and in particular lateral filing cabinets. Maine has been manufacturing steel based office furniture from their site in Kings Langley Hertfordshire since the 1960’s. Following the deregulation of the stock market there was a large influx of US based Companies into the UK. KI Office furniture

Another US office furniture manufacturer, known mainly for the production of metal office filing cabinets and storage cupboards. Founded in 1941 by A f Krueger and originally called Krueger Metal Products their first factory in Illinois had only one steel press and 25 workers. Simple folding chairs were produced using the waste from nearby steel plants. In 1945 a new manufacturing facility was established in Green Bay Wisconsin. Further growth in the supply of folding chairs and tables lead to the opening of third site in 1964 at Tupelo, at this time Krueger was the largest provider of folding chairs and tables. In the 1970’s the company entered the contract office furniture market and in 1983 became Krueger Inc. and finally in 1988 bacame KI. KI are now the 6th  largest office furniture manufacturer in the US and employ around 3000 people across 10 manufacturing sites. Office furniture ranges include Spacesaver storage, 700 series lateral filing cupboards, Matrix stackable chairs and K5 conference chairs. KI have a UK showroom on High Holborn Oxford Street in London. The European division of KI focuses on storage and filing solutions and conference chairs and tables

Florence Knoll Basset

Florence Knoll Bassett (born 1917)
An American furniture designer who studied under the eminent Mies Van Der Roche. Boren in Michigan and then known as Florence Schust. In her early years she worked with the Bahaus group alongside Marcel Breur.
During the second world way she convinced Hans Knoll to employ her in his new furniture Company and to set up an interior design division to liaise with Architects. This was a shrewd and successful move that lead to the creation of many furniture design icons of the 20th Century. Florence married Hans Knoll in 1946. Together they created the Knoll Corporation a Company that produces and designs office furniture and designer furniture on a international scale. Florence designs for desks were very minimalist and square. Florence was also an early pioneer of total design where the interior of an office space was taken as a whole and all aspects including signage, decor, advertising and logos were considered holistically. Early clients who subscribed to here theories for creation of their office environment included HJ Heinz and CBS
Florence’s design pieces can be used as reception furniture and furniture for general office use

Available in 11 wood finishes, Havana, Apple, Beech, Black Ash, Cherry, Light Grey, Maple, Mocha, Swiss Pear and Walnut. Table and desk tops are 25mm thick.
60mm diameter metal legs are available in Chrome, Silver or Light r Grey. The legs also have rotating disc levellers for use on uneven floors or where incremental height adjustment is required. Conference tables are provided in rectangular, circular and trapezoidal options. Standard edges are straight 2mm radius however there is also an optional bull nose edge option in a range of contrasting pvc colours. Arrow head bases provide a further option is this meeting table is required as a boardroom table.
