Charles Eames (1907-1978) and his wife Ray (1912-1988) were responsible for the Aluminium series of chair from which the Eames style soft pad chair has been reproduced. The couple designed furniture, puzzles and children’s toys in the Los Angeles over a forty year period. They also designed housed most notable the Eames house or Case study house no 8 Working initially with plywood utilising a new moulding process in his spare room at home and holding down a day job at MGM studios as a set designer Charles and Ray first started with a plywood leg splint and won a commission from the US Navy for 5000 of them. Early collaborations with furniture manufacturer Herman Miller and later with Vitra gave rise to the lounge chair, the Aria or Aluminum series and the Wire Chair. The Chaise lounge chair was in fact deigned for Film Director and friend Billy Wilder These chairs can still be found in many offices today and some pieces are also used as reception chairs.
