Steelcase With sales of over three billion dollars per annum and over sixteen thousand employees world wide Steelcase are the global leader of the office furniture industry. Originating in 1912 as the Metal office furniture company in Grand Rapids Michigan, they received their first patent for a metal office waste paper bin this then lead to the manufacture of metal office desks in 1914 with the fist sale of 200 fireproof desks to a Boston skyscraper Custom House Tower.. The Company had 15 employees and a turnover of 76,000 dollars The following year saw the production of wooden office desks and MR E A Holschler of St Louis becomes their first office furniture dealer. In 1924 The Meal Office furniture company changed its name to Steelcase. 1937 saw the production of oval shaped desks based on designs by Frank Lloyd Wright. 1945 saw the Japanese surrender being signed on a desk manufactured by Steelcase. Steelcase opened up new manufacturing facilities in Toronto and then Californian as desman for its products increased. The 60’s and 70’s Steelcase expended still further and introduced ground breaking office furniture ranges including Mobiles an early concept in system furniture and Series 9000 along the lines of Herman Miller’s Action office. The 80’s saw joint ventures with French and German Companies and the entry into the UK market. Steelcase are at the front of office and system furniture with signature office furniture ranges including TNT, The Leap Office chair and the Think office chair
