The Birks cinema was originally housed within an art deco style building in the rural town of Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. In 1980 after 43 years in existence showed its last film and closed its doors to become an amusement arcade. The arcade eventually closed in 2004 and the once attractive landmark building lay derelict until 2009 when the Friends of the Birks Cinema purchased it with the intention of renovating and bringing it back to life as a community cinema. This small group and the community of dedicated individuals have finally achieved this with seven years of hard work and fundraising.
We were interested in the project and were happy to discuss with them the furniture requirements for the café area (56 covers) and the lounge area (12 covers). It was clear that they had already started some groundwork for this part of the project as they had a few ideas as to what would be suitable within each area. The furniture however had to reflect the art deco period yet still allow each user today to sit comfortably to relax and socialise within the newly refurbished surroundings of the cinema.
The Bingo chair was decided on as it has a generous beech shell, is available with and without arms and comes in fabric and faux leather options across a spectrum of colours which eventually were chosen to compliment the interior scheme. The Kirkos chair was also chosen for the bar and lounge area these are elegant and have a unique shape taking the name from the Greek word, to encircle. The Somerset red leather sofas and red leather cubes also featured in one of the other lounge areas these sofas are made from real leather and have been suited to a number of commercial applications.
The table tops were specials as they needed to have a ply edge and were covered in a Durion Laminate these had rounded edges which again complimented the cinema building and the art deco period of the time. We sent many samples to the cinema as we were fully aware that a lot of time and effort had been invested in to getting this community project up and running. We enjoyed working and collaborating with the Friends of Birks Cinema and they are happy with the service and the furniture we supplied. Here are the photos they kindly sent to us.
