Ideas - Screen Manifestations

Cool screen seperators

With government guidelines on the return back to work firmly in place we have seen an unprecedented demand for acrylic screens, glass screens, sneeze screens, coughing screens perspex screens anti-bacterial screens or simply Covid-19 safe office screens. The demand is high because we are required to practice social distancing when we return back to workplace. If in some cases this is not possible, it is necessary for employers to install the screens to prevent and protect the worker from any harmful transmission. These screens will help workers feel reassured and protected but there is another aspect and safety factor that has to be considered, that’s the use of manifestations.

What are manifestations?

Where large glass partitions, partitions and doors feature in the workplace it must be marked with the correct glass manifestation (generally small frosted dots, squares, or bands) to make sure that the glass is made apparent. Manifestations are designed to prevent people from unknowingly walking into them, something we may have already done, or witnessed.

This is not a case of ‘health and safety gone mad’ either as there are around 52,000 accidents per year in the UK involving glass fixtures.

The Building Reguations 2000: Part M states that glass entrance doors and glass screens will satisfy requirement M1 or M2 if:

1. They are clearly defined with glass manifestation on the glass at two levels; between 850mm and 1000mm and between 1400mm and 1600mm above the floor, contrasting visually with the background seen through the glass (both inside and out) in all lighting conditions.

2. Manifestation takes the form of logo or sign at least 150mm high (repeated if on a glazed screen), or a decorative feature such as broken lines or continuous bands, at least 50mm high.

Whilst these regulations do stipulate when the manifestation should appear, there are no requirements as to how it should appear.

So, it is time to get creative!

This presents several possibilities when considering applying manifestations to glass screens and partitions in the workplace. There are several creative glass manifestation ideas on Pinterest and even the office reality HQ, providing interest and entertainment for our visitors and guests. Feel free to ask us about them 🙂

Glass manifestations can be logos, circles, squares, wavy lines, leaves, trees, icons or typography, as long as the manifestation provides a visual contrast against the glass, it’s within the regulations and serving its intended purpose.

In summary,  with use of mobile screens to create safe zones, workspaces and walkways increasing we have put some ideas together to give you an idea of how you can add interest to your workspace by using manifestations.
