There have been many designers that, throughout the 20th century, affected the way we look at and experience furniture. In this section we feature seating that has been inspired by some of the influential designs of the 20th century that are still considered signature chairs even today.
Here is a brief look at some of the famous designs that our design classics range is inspired by.
The Panton S Chair was created in the 1960s by Danish designer Verner Panton. It is often thought to be one of the masterpieces of the Danish design industry and is considered to be the world’s first moulded plastic chair. Built during the Pop movement the chair is viewed as an influential part of the futuristic 1960s decade and due to its organic shape it fast became a favourite. It was featured in several magazines during the 1970s but its popularity again once grew when it was featured alongside Kate Moss on the January 1995 cover of Vogue, photographed by Nick Knight. Today it remains popular and due to its rich history can be found in a number of museums.
The Eames Lounge chair has remained an influential seat since it was first released in 1956 by Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company. The Plywood material was moulded in a way that had not been seen before and this was due to a new process of heating the wood to an extremely high temperature before bending it into smooth curves. The traditional Eames Lounge Chair was constructed using three Plywood shells that were curved – the headrest, the backrest and then the seat. A number of chairs have been designed since then that have been inspired by the innovativeness of Charles and Ray Eames and aim to provide the sleek aesthetics whilst retaining the durability and security of the original.
Designer furniture has a rich history that can open up insight into the difference in production techniques and how the industrial period revolutionised the manufacturing process of seating. It is easy to replicate such aesthetics today with design classics and that is why we aim to provide a range of design inspired seating for your application.
All of our design classics are available at affordable prices and are delivered to any UK mainland address free of charge so you can buy with confidence. For any queries on costs, orders or lead time don’t hesitate to contact our sales team.
